Cyclone ‘Si-Trang’ wreaks havoc in Bangladesh, claims five lives

New Delhi: Cyclone Si-Trang made landfall in the Bay of Bengal late last night. The tremors hit the southwest coast of Bangladesh late on Monday night. And its impact is strong, with heavy rains in the coastal areas of Bangladesh. Meanwhile, there are reports that five people have died due to the landfall of Si-Trang. A disaster management control spokesman said five people died in Barguna, Narel, Sarajganj district and Bholar Island district.

Earlier on Monday, 2.19 lakh people were evacuated to safer places in Bangladesh. The impact of the cyclone has already been seen in the south-west coast districts. Most parts of the country, including Dhaka, are witnessing incessant rains. The meteorological department has issued an alert for various ports. The Met office has warned that southwestern Patuakhali, Bhola, Barguna and Jhalkathi are likely to be the worst hit by the cyclone. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cyclone Si-Trang hit coastal Bangladesh at 11.30 pm on October 24, about 40 km east of Dhaka. It will move north-northeastwards and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the next six hours.
