Navi Mumbai: Spain defeated Colombia 1-0 in the final to win the U-17 Women’s World Cup title for the second time in a row. Nigeria won the bronze medal match. The final match played at the DY Patil Stadium was a tough one.
The first half play between attack and counter-attack was goalless. The second half also saw a similar game. But in the 82nd minute, Colombia’s Ana Guzman’s error led to a suicide goal. This goal was the decisive goal of the match. Taking a 1-0 lead, Spain put up a defensive performance in the last eight minutes.
Colombia did not get a chance to repay the goal again. Nothing spectacular was seen in the injury time either. In the end, Spain won 1-0 and retained the title. Earlier in 2018, Spain got a chance to become champions for the first time. It had earlier won a bronze medal in 2010 and 2016. Colombia are content with the runners-up by playing in the final for the first time.
Sandra Villafane of the winning team was named player of the match and Colombia’s Linda Kaicedo (4 goals) was named the best goal scorer. Nigeria beat Germany 3-3 (3-2) in a penalty shoot-out to win bronze medal. Nigeria scored their first goal (20th minute) in the first half of the game. In the second half, both teams scored five goals. Nigeria scored in the 48th, 63rd minutes and Germany scored in the 73rd, 84th and 90th minutes. Nigeria took the lead for 89 minutes. In the 90th minute, Germany’s Lorin Bender scored a brilliant field goal to make it 3-3. The game was goalless in injury time. In the end, Nigeria won the bronze medal with a 3-2 win in the shoot-out.
Apart from the 2018 edition, Nigeria have played in all the six World Cups. But for the first time the team progressed to the semi-finals this time and managed to win bronze after losing in the semi-finals. The U-17 Women’s World Cup was held in Bhubaneswar, Goa and Navi Mumbai from July 11. The domestic Indian team played in Bhubaneswar in all the group matches.
