The organization worked for the protection and rights of war veterans and civilians. It was a private organization. It was founded in 1863 by Henry Denant and Goustav Monier. According to International Humanitarian Law, 25 members of the organization had certain rights to protect the lives of war-torn individuals and their dignity. it was also the winner of the ICRC Nobel Prize in 1917, 1944 and 1963.
The Geneva Conventions were based on the ideas of Henry Dunant, and agreed to establish a special independent organization for the treatment of wounded soldiers and civilians in war. Henry Dunant was awarded the first Nobel Prize in 1901. During World War I, hostilities were raging across the world. After the end of World War II, an annual event was held to establish around the world. A report was presented at the 15th International Conference of the Red Cross in Tokyo, Japan, in 1936 and approved. After the Second World War in 1946, the Tokyo proposal was studied by the League of Red Cross Society (LRCS) and renamed the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRCs).

The first Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8, 1948. By 1984 the day has been celebrated as World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
